Let’s talk about the idea that you can always turn your passion into profit.
It’s true that you might be able to turn your passion into profit but starting a business might not always be the best answer.
Messages around business have become muddy and unclear. Believe me, it affects us all and I can only imagine it’s especially confusing for people starting out in business or considering starting a business. On one hand, you are told that you can earn money doing only what you love and on the other hand you have words like ‘market demand’ and ‘profitability’ flying around at you.
Hobbies do not always make for great businesses…but it does depend on what you want from your business.
For example, if your hobby is making animal portraits with crayons then yes you could turn that into a business. Would it be wildly profitable? Probably not. Could it make you enough to quit your job? Possibly. Is there market demand for it? Maybe! There is a theory that if you can find 1000 true fans of your work then you can earn a good living (not a fortune) and I’ll be damned if you can’t find at least 1000 people who love animal portraits.
However, if your goal is to make a shit ton of money and take over the world then animal portraits probably isn’t the best place to start.
If your passion doesn’t quite translate neatly into a business idea then think outside the box. Is there a well-paying career you could use your passion for? Is there a more promising and profitable business idea that would incorporate some of your passion? Or perhaps you’d still enjoy it and could use the money you create to spend more time on your passion? There are a lot of different ways to make this work for yourself.
